Spotlight on…Dani

January 3, 2009

daniOur Dani is the newest, the youngest AND the tallest Woman of Note.  She joined our group in 2003, and not only were we gifted with the addition of her beautiful voice, but we were blessed with her friendship, as well!

whole-group-dani-center

Dani primarily sings first alto with her singing partner, Robin, and she also is a strong and solid soloist for our octet.  daniSince we have not made a formal recording of “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye”, you’ll have to take a listen to it at one of our concerts.  Hearing Dani’s lead vocals alone is worth the trip!

This girl is a total dynamo…she is a wife and mother of two, she

home schools, teaches at York County Community College, volunteers at local nursing homes, is an active member of her church, sells Arbonne products, AND she sings with us – WHEW!  Her children have served as our “Kids of Note” for several years now, selling our cds (and mouse pads AND coffee mugs!) during our concerts.

Some truths about our friend, Dani:

-she is a very delicate and ladylike sneezer – say  iss-you in your lightest voice…now say it even lighter…there, you have it:-)

-she gets most thoroughly, wholly and utterly carsick when she rides over hills and around bends in the back seat after eating a hearty brunch.  The last time this happened she had to be driven home by a police officer…

dani-green-hat

-she is very chilly – always.  A combination of long underwear, fleece pajamas, and a maxed-out thermostat MAY get her through the night.

-she occasionally finds herself at a loss for words – she was completely speechless when a member of the Oak Ridge Boys asked her how long our group had been together.  Dani??  Dani are you there???

Our Dani is a treasure to us and to all who know her.  She is most assuredly a woman of note!

Spotlight on…Beth

December 7, 2008

beth-wonBeth is another founding member of Women of Note–having been with the group since its inception. Beth can be heard regularly singing soprano 2 with her singing partner, Sue, but her lovely voice also allows her to spend time joining the soprano one’s on very high pieces–especially at Christmas time!

She is also our #1 rhythm keeper and can play a mean cowbell!

Beth is an incredible ideas person–creative, amazing, enthusiastic and FUN!!  Beth brings a wide variety of talents to the group (none of which we could do without!!)

-)

No one can uncork Dom Perignon like our Beth:-)

–she is our resident “blogger extraordinaire” (although we gave her a break and didn’t make her create her own “spotlight” section!), top notch Cosmo creator, and retreat game expert.

If we need the perfect drink to go with the perfect game–Beth never fails!  Beth also makes the world’s best bacon.  It’s a fact that no one can fry up bacon like Beth.  (Her dog, Reno, can vouch for that!)

Beth is a busy mom of two children, a 4th grade teacher in the South Berwick school system and a successful Ebay store owner.

She loves to go camping and Geocaching with her family and has the most incredible gift of rhyming. When we need a special song written, Beth always has just the right words.

We have so many wonderful moments and fun memories thanks to Beth!  She is truly an AMAZING Woman of Note!

lisa-main-pic

Yet another charter member of Women of Note…Lisa! What would we ever do without her?

Need a place to get a good pedicure? Lisa will give you a list!

Need a gold sequined scarf and matching pumps? Lisa will pull them out of her closet!

What should you do if your hotel catches on fire? Lisa will hand you a wet towel and your pocketbook.

Need to know how to thwart an attacker? Lisa will teach you the right moves!

Want to raise money for a good cause? Lisa has the caring and connections to get the job done!

What can we say? She is a phenomenon and we are blessed to have her in our lives and as our friend.

"Here's to us!"

Lisa is a married mother of two who volunteers her time and energy to a plethora of causes in and around Southern Maine. She enjoys shopping, helping others, spending time with George and Barbara Bush, lisa-and-ghwbushoff-roading in her Hummer, and dining out. She can throw a party together (and a really GOOD party) at a moment’s notice, and she is able to parallel park in a space that is exactly the length of her car.

Lisa - always smiling!

She not only sings with the Women, but she also accompanies Tim Janis (http://www.timjanis.com/) both in the recording studio AND on tour.

Nancy

Nancy

Nancy is an original member of Women of Note, meaning she has been with our group since 1992.  Nancy has worn a lot of hats for this group, but she has most prominently served as our money manager.  If any financial decisions need to be made, Nancy is always there with the hard money facts.  She’s just what we need in this economy:-)

Nancy loves animals, and they love her!

Nancy loves animals, and they love her!

Nancy is mother and stepmother to 5 children.  She works full time and volunteers for various organizations.  She also has a whole houseful of pets, including a saucy bird who knows her by name.

Nancy primarily sings first soprano for the group along with her singing partner, Lisa.  However, she has the widest range of any of the women – three octaves – WoW!

Although the group depends on Nancy for so many things (and we would be LOST without her!), she also owes her singing girlfriends a huge debt of gratitude.  After all, we were the ones who secured a husband for her!  Now that I mention it, BOB owes us, too…

Spotlight on…Sue

Sue - at Wells Harbor Concert Series

Sue has been with the Women of Note since its inception way back in 1992. She has served as business manager, chief organizer and overall anchor to the group. Sue is primarily a second soprano for the group, but her beautiful voice allows her to sing first soprano and alto, as well.

If you’d like to hear Sue, take a listen to “Like A Ship in the Harbor”.

The captain of our ship!

Sue never leaves home without her pitch pipe. She has often been our group chauffeur. She loves to meet famous people, and she is the group favorite of one very famous man!

Sue - having a rare "bad hair day"!

Beth and Sue - Singing partners!

Sue is busy with her two children, a newish job for which she travels all over creation, hosting a book club, volunteering for various groups, and, of course… US. She loves to sing, go to the theater and travel, and she has a most amazing gift for rhyming! She has written several personal songs for members of the group and their families.

Yes, she is another AMAZING Woman of Note!

Robin, singing her heart out

Robin, singing her heart out

As diverse as she is talented, Robin has been with Women of Note for nearly 9 years.  Although she entered our group to fill a slot as a first alto, we soon found out that she has a huge range and her heart truly lies in singing first soprano.

Robin sings regularly with the South Berwick Community Chorus and was also with the Manchester Choral Society for several seasons.  Just this summer she performed the Liebeslieder Waltzes at two venues in Southern Maine.

Besides her singing, Robin is busy appraising homes, teaching ballroom dance at the Portsmouth Ballroom, and giving massages!  For the past two years she has partnered up with a local “celebrity” for the “Dancing with the Seacoast Stars” competition.  She can also regularly be seen kayaking along the rivers in coastal Maine.  She is an amazing Woman of Note!

Denis

Denis

Coach, fine-tuned ear, number one fan… Denis wears a lot of hats for the Women of Note! He has been with the group for nearly 13 years and during that time he’s managed to deal with a group of 8 women every week… which can be difficult. (Or he actually he could just be considered a very lucky guy by some, I suppose…) Occasionally, when the girls get off topic, Denis resorts to tuning into the Patriots game until we come back around to the business at hand!

Denis and Beth

Denis and Beth

Denis is a very talented guy. He plays several instruments, has a beautiful bass voice, and directs both school and church choruses, in addition to giving private music lessons. In his spare time, he can be seen in a dapper red suit playing Portland’s Santa Claus.

What does Denis like? Well, he enjoys music, of course, and spending time with his family. But we like to think that he mostly enjoys hanging out with us!

Spotlight on…Judy

Judy

Judy

Many of the songs sung by the women are driven by a steady, low beat. Our Judy is one of two 2nd altos who keeps that rhythm going. Granted, she winds up with some less-than-interesting lyrics…”doo ba doo”, “dit dit ‘n dit”, and so on!

Fran, Judy and Lisa at South Berwick's Strawberry Festival

Fran, Judy and Lisa

Judy has been with Women of Note since the very beginning, back in 1992, but her singing career started long before that. At age 8, she sang her first solo, “I’m Always Chasin’ Rainbows” and she has been performing ever since. She even had a long stint in the Sweet Adelines.

Judy and the girls at Walker's Point

Judy and the girls at Walker's Point

Judy enjoys spending time with family and friends. She loves to travel, and recently took a trip with her daughter to Tuscany. Since we’ve known her, we’ve discovered a few things: Judy loves to sleep, she should never have wine before she sings, she has been known to have a lead foot, and she is easily left behind because she walks so slow!

Fran

Fran has been with Women of Note since its inception in 1992. Yes, she is an ORIGINAL:-) Fran sings mostly alto 2 with her singing partner, Judy, but her range takes her to some pretty high notes.

Fran and Judy - our 2nd altos

Fran and Judy - our 2nd altos

Fran is by far the funniest Woman of Note. She keeps this girl group cracking up with her dry comments and her willingness to try just about anything. Ask any of the girls about the time Fran was not fastened securely into her car seat and you will be in for peals of laughter!

Fran walks 2 miles every day, volunteers at the library, and plays bridge every week. She loves soap operas, being with her friends, and enjoying a nice glass of wine…or two!
